I recently experienced a situation in which a patient was not brought into the decision regarding their treatment plan. The patient was a 75-year-old female with a history of diabetes and hypertension. She was admitted to the hospital for a severe infection and was being considered for a course of antibiotics to treat her condition. However, the patient was not asked for her opinion on the treatment plan, and the physician prescribed the antibiotics without further discussion. This lack of input from the patient meant that her preferences and values were not considered when deciding on the treatment plan. As a result, the patient felt that her autonomy had been disregarded and was unhappy with the decision. This could have been avoided if the patient had been included in the decision-making process and her preferences and values had been considered.
