The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) play vital roles in healthcare policy making by informing the decisions made. Policies determine the allocation of resources in healthcare delivery. Therefore, nurses should participate in the policy work to influence the process and practice standards that assure quality care (Dahlin & Coyne, 2019). There are existing opportunities for them to participate in the implementation of new policies. One existing opportunity is for them to become members of the American Nurses Association (ANA), which provides a policy activist tool equipment. ANA gives RNs resources that help them know how to participate in political campaigns, engage politicians, conduct lobbying tasks, and write letters to the editor.
Another opportunity for nurses is to advance their education and become APRNs where they can easily act as activists for other nurses, communities, patients, healthcare institutions, and relatives (Dahlin & Coyne, 2019). The advocacy helps them influence the policies implemented as people’s voices are fully represented. After advancing their education, they gain a better and more comprehensive understanding of healthcare issues and can easily be positioned to support the community. APRNs are qualified to advocate for healthcare policies during their implementation.
